Dust Devils get a new voice

I was interested to find out more about the Tri-City Dust Devils' newest hire — radio play-by-play man Jason Schwartz, a recent graduate of USC's broadcast journalism school — so I took to the web to see what I could see.

Here's a good feature story from the Corvallis Gazette Times about Schwartz's ascension from a high school ballplayer at Campbell Hall High School in Los Angeles to a promising broadcaster.

He's a big fan of Vin Scully, the Dodgers' legendary announcer, and he's accumulated valuable experience calling a variety of sports for the Trojans, including football, baseball and volleyball. His current gig is play-by-play man for the USC women's basketball team.

He has spent the past two seasons broadcasting in the Pacific Northwest, calling games for the Wenatchee Apple Sox and the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League in 2009-2010. But he'll get a chance to see a little bit more of the region taking scenic bus trips with the team down Interstate 84 along the Columbia River and into the Yakima Valley.

I know a lot of people will miss Mike Boyle, who gave us four outstanding seasons of memorable calls. He'll always be a friend of the Dust Devils. The good news is we'll still get to see him when the Spokane Indians come to town.

But personally, I'm excited about the arrival of Jason Schwartz. I can't wait to see how he calls a game and hear the new style he will bring to Gesa Stadium.

By the way, the season isn't as far away as you might think. Pitchers and catchers report in just over two weeks.
