The WSU men's and women's basketball teams were victorious Thursday night against Arizona State. It's the second time this season that both teams have won on the same day. On Jan. 8, the Wazzu women beat Oregon State 58-50, and the men defeated Oregon 77-63.
While compiling the college basketball roundups for today's paper, I thought, "How many times did both WSU teams win on the same day last season?" I dug up the results from the 2009-10 season and found the answer was three (Nov. 28, Dec. 19 and Feb. 6). The teams played on the same day 13 times (Nov. 28, Dec. 5, 19, 22, Jan. 14, 16, 21, 23, Feb. 4, 6, 18, 20, 27).
Perhaps more rare than winning on the same day is winning on the same day against the same school (hereby known as a double double). Before Thursday night, Wazzu last achieved said feat Feb. 26, 2009, against Arizona. Last season, the Cougs' only shot at a double double came against UW on Feb. 27, 2010. Both Coug teams lost — that's known as double trouble.
So far this season, Wazzu's teams have played on the same day five times (Nov. 26, Dec. 31, Jan. 6, 8, 20). But from here on out, the only time the Coug squads won't play on the same day is when they face UW in late February (the women play on the 26th, the men on the 27th). Also, the Cougs have eight more chances this regular season for a Wazzu double double — or double trouble, depending on your perspective. Double trouble has found the Cougs once this season, against USC on Dec. 31.
If you have plans tonight, Coug fans, impress your friends with these factoids.
