While working on the scoreboard page Friday night, I was pleasantly surprised to see this on the women's basketball wire:
Washington State 77, California 63
The Cougs had entered the game with a 3-13 overall record and just one Pac-10 victory. But they found their groove against the visiting Golden Bears, the defending WNIT champions. Wazzu hit 12 3-pointers and was 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field. Four Cougs scored in double figures. Defensively, Wazzu held Cal's leading scorer, DeNesha Stallworth, to eight points.
A good night all around for the Cougs, who have won two in a row. I don't think their winning streak will continue against No. 4 Stanford on Sunday, but beating Cal is a good confidence-booster.
