Humphries in the spotlight

Spencer Humphries has spent most of the season sharing ice time with Sam Grist and Drydn Dow. Saturday, the 6-2, 210-pound defenseman made his case to get a little more of the precious ice time, scoring a goal, recording an assist and getting into two fights.

In the hockey world, a goal, a assist and a fight is labeled as a Gordie Howe hat trick. In Tri-City Americans circles, a goal, an assist and two fights is a Terry Virtue hat trick, named after the former Americans assistant coach.

I have to say, I thought it was Spencer's best game of the year. Between Spencer and the 6-4, 210-pound Sam Grist, I think the blue line will be just fine for years to come.

Coming up Tuesday, the Seattle Thunderbirds are in town. Calvin Pickard has best be ready for the Manitoba Mob — the line of Brendan Shinnimin, Adam Hughesman and Mason Wilgosh — who combined for five goals and six assists in a 9-4 thumping of Lethbridge on Saturday.

It was a great night for former Tri-City goalies. Carey Price led Montreal to a 3-2 win over Boston; Brian Boucher backed Philly to a 2-1 win over New Jersey; and Tyler Weiman led the Manitoba Moose to a victory.

Ams goalie Drew Owsley surpassed Boucher on Saturday for wins. Owsley picked up his 61st with the Ams — Boucher had 60. Boucher's win over New Jersey was his 109th NHL win.
