'Tis the season for Cougar basketball

Hark! The WSU men's basketball team is 5-1 after nearly upsetting No. 5 Kansas State on Friday, something many Coug fans might have missed with the shadow of the Apple Cup looming large.

At 8 tonight, the Cougars will play host to Gonzaga, which has had a disappointing start to the season. If the Bulldogs lose to Wazzu, they would fall to 4-4 for the first time in the Mark Few era, according to today's Herald.

I'm kind of a stat person, as you might have noticed from my football posts. After seeing the Cougs languish at the bottom of the football rankings all season, I have found Wazzu's basketball numbers are a sight for sore eyes. The Cougs boast several Pac-10 leaders: Klay Thompson (scoring, 21.2 points), Brock Motum (field-goal percentage, .759) and Marcus Capers (assist-to-turnover ratio, 5.50). Also, Wazzu is No. 1 in the conference in scoring defense, allowing about 57 points per game. At least one WSU team has succeeded in keeping points off the board.

In case you haven't gotten to see the Coug men in action, FSN is televising the WSU-Gonzaga game live.
