Four years ago today or tomorrow, I can’t really remember, I covered a Class 1A football team win a quarterfinal playoff game in Texas.
The McCamey Badgers, located about 30 minutes south of Odessa, Texas — home of Permian football and the basis for Friday Night Lights the book and movie (not the lame TV show) — defeated Sunray 28-14 to advance to the semifinals.
The Badgers defeated Valley Mills 28-7 the next weekend to advance to the Class 1A Division I state championship game, quite a feat for a school with 121 kids in it.
McCamey didn’t fare so well in that state final, though, getting rocked 42-13 by Alto — which had a paltry six Division I athletes among its starters.

Anyway, long story short.
My first football season working in Texas took me to a Class 1A state championship game.
Well, this Friday I’ll be riding in a car with Kevin Anthony (I refuse to drive over the pass in the winter) to go help do some coverage on Kamiakin vs. Bellevue. Then Saturday morning I will rise — very early for me — and cover a Class 1A state championship football game, as Connell plays Cascade Christian.
I’m guessing Cascade Christian doesn’t have six Division I athletes in its starting lineup, I’m also guessing Connell isn’t going to lose 42-13.
One thing that is guaranteed to be different is the weather. I wore shorts to the McCamey state final. It was about 85 degrees out. It was played Dec. 15.
I have no idea who will win, though. Guess we’ll see.
