Final cross country polls ... as if we didn't know

The final cross country coaches state polls were released Sunday night, and just when I was loading up on one-liners about how we decided all this Saturday, it turns out there are some differences from the state results.

Several teams that came up short of qualifying for state — those from regions were state-quality teams outnumber state berths — made it back into the top 10.

Among those were the Walla Walla boys (No. 6 in 4A), who along with Mead (No. 8) didn’t make it out of regionals behind champion Eienhower, No. 2 Lewis & Clark and No. 4 Ferris.

Also, the two Spokane schools — Mount Spokane (No. 7) and Shadle Park (No. 8) — that didn’t even get out of the Greater Spokane League are back in the 3A poll.

The Kamiakin boys (fifth) and girls (fourth) ended with their state placings, as did the 2B/1B champion Tri-Cities Prep boys.

Of course with cross country, the state meet hardly signals the end of the season. This weekend is the Nike Cross Nationals Northwest Regional in Boise, followed by Border Clash on Nov. 21 in Beaverton, Ore., pitting the top runners from Washington and Oregon.
