WHL broadcaster hits milestone

Red Deer Rebels radio man Cam Moon called his 1,000th WHL game Oct. 23 at Spokane — a 4-2 victory.

Come Saturday night, Moon, 40, will call his 1,005th game when the Rebels take on the Americans.

“It seems like I’ve been here 20 minutes,” Moon said of his time in Red Deer. “This is exactly what I wanted to do when I was 20 years old in this league and I knew wasn’t going to be a pro player. I love this league. I thought maybe, just maybe, I could be a radio broadcaster in this league. I took the WHL money and went to school. It has been exactly what I wanted to do.”

Moon, a former goalie with Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Medicine Hat, joined the Rebels in 1998 and has seen the likes of Colby Armstrong, Cam Ward, Brandon Sutter, Colin Fraser, Jim Vandermeer and Dion Phaneuf pass through the Red Deer roster.
