Alex Pechurskiy was wandering the halls of Toyota Center on Tuesday night. The overage Russian goalie was released by the Americans last week at the overage deadline.
Alex told me he might have a shot at playing for the Portland Winterhawks, but things hinge on Swiss forward Nino Niederreiter, who is playing with the New York Islanders. Nino has one goal in six games for the Islanders, with the tally coming in the season opener.
Nino will soon play his ninth NHL game, which will force the team to make a difficult decision. Once the rookie has suited up for 10 games, the first year of his entry-level contract will kick in so the Isles will have to decide whether they wish to keep him with the big club all season.
If Nino is returned to Portland, Pechurskiy will be left out in the cold.
