I love Opening Day

I love Opening Day for baseball. Everybody starts at 0-0, and they all have a chance to win the World Series on Opening Day.

It's also great to see where everyone is as the season opens.

Here is where our Mid-Columbians are this week as the season begins:

Richland's Travis Buck made the Oakland A's roster after leading the team in spring training with 16 RBI. He did not, however, start on Opening Day.

Walla Walla lefty Eric O'Flaherty made the Atlanta Braves' roster and will be part of that team's bullpen.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have two local connections who started on Opening Day. Nyjer Morgan, who played at Walla Walla Community College, started in left field and hit in the leadoff spot. Catcher Ryan Doumit is from Moses Lake and hit in the cleanup spot.

Pasco's Jeremy Bonderman (shoulder) is beginning the season for the Detroit Tigers on the disabled list.

Jason Repko, a Hanford High graduate, was one of the last cuts for the Dodgers and will begin this season playing at Triple-A Albuquerque.

And finally, Chad Orvella, a former standout at Columbia Basin College who a few years back was the closer for the Tampa Bay Rays before injuries sidelined him, starts the season at Triple-A Durham for the Rays.
