Juan Pablo Angel converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 2-1 win over the expansion Philadelphia Union on Saturday in Harrison, N.J.
Angel’s tie-breaking goal was his third of the season, all in the last two games, and franchise-best 48th of his career. Referee Kevin Stott awarded the penalty kick after Union defender Michael Orozco touched Joel Lindpere’s long pass to Angel with his arm in the box.
The Red Bulls have won four of five after winning just five league games all last season. They didn’t get their fourth MLS victory last year until Aug. 30. Philadelphia fell to 1-3.
“It’s phenomenal that we’re getting the results,” Angel said. “But there’s a lot of work to do.”
Galaxy 0, at Wizards 0: Kansas City shut down Los Angeles’ Edson Buddle for the first time this season, but Kei Kamara’s goal-line blunder meant the Wizards (2-1-1) had to settle for a scoreless tie with the Galaxy (4-0-1). Kamara found himself alone in front of Los Angeles’ goal in the 16th minute, but slipped on the wet grass and whiffed on the shot. When he fell, his arm knocked the ball into the net and he was called for a handball.
At Crew 1, Real Salt Lake 0: Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute, and Columbus (1-3-1) beat Salt Lake (2-0-1).
At Fire 2, Dynamo 0: Midfielders Baggio Husidic and Peter Lowry scored goals, and Andrew Dykstra stopped six shots for second shutout of the season as Chicago (2-2-1) won its second straight game by beating Houston (2-2-1).
Rapids 2, at Revolution 1: Pablo Mastroeni scored in the 73rd minute to help Colorado (3-1-1) beat New England (2-3) for its third straight victory.
At Chivas USA 3, Earthquakes 2: Justin Braun and Chukwudi Chijindu scored in the second half for Chivas (2-3), and goalkeeper Zach Thornton prevented San Jose (2-2) from tying it in the 72nd minute with a diving one-handed save on Ryan Johnson’s 13-yard header.
