The Southridge Suns girls soccer team has proved one thing over and over again.
You may get them down, but the Suns are never out.
The Suns proved it again during Saturday’s Class 3A District 5 championship match, erasing a 2-1 second-half deficit en route to a 3-2 home victory to earn the program’s third district title since 2010.
With the score tied at 2 in the 63rd minute, Emma Schutt fired a cross toward the goal mouth, where Kayleen Sambrano lost her footing but still managed to head the ball into the net for a 3-2 lead.

“Any time you come back and beat a good team, it shows the heart and determination of your team,” Southridge coach Greg Sambrano said. “That’s been our team all year.”
After Savannah Brown gave the Suns a 1-0 lead in the third minute, Kamiakin responded just before the half when Heather Donais drew a penalty kick and scored the equalizer. Donais assisted Rilee Castilla on the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute, giving Southridge some work to do.
“It was an entertaining game. I liked the fact that we went ahead and came back,” Greg Sambrano said. “You certainly have to give Kamiakin a lot of props, because they played three games in six days.”
Both teams earned a spot in the upcoming Class 3A District 5/8 regional playoffs, with Southridge hosting Mt. Spokane, the No. 1 seed from the Greater Spokane League, at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Kamiakin will host No. 2 seed North Central.
