The Tri-City Americans opened the Red Lion Hotels Preseason Tournament on Thursday with a 2-1 shootout loss to the Kootenay Ice at Toyota Center.
Tyler Sandhu scored the opening goal for the Americans with 39 seconds remaining in the first period.
Kootenay’s Zak Zborosky tied the score at 4:25 of the third, and after overtime settled nothing, the game went to a shootout.
Connor Barley and Jared Legien converted goals in the shootout for the Ice, while the Americans went 0-for-2 on attempts by Morgan Geekie and Kyle Olson.
Beck Warm got the start for Tri-City and stopped all 18 shots that came his way in 31 minutes of action. Nick Sanders took the loss, stopping 14 of 15 in regulation and overtime.
Wyatt Hoflin had 37 saves in playing a compete game for the Ice.
Tri-City outshot Kootenay 38-34.
The tournament continues today with Everett taking on Portland at 11 a.m., followed by Kootenay vs. Seattle at 3 p.m., and Tri-City vs. Red Deer at 7:05 p.m.
In the first game Thursday, Prince George scored three first-period goals and held on to beat Everett 4-2.
Spokane followed with a 7-2 victory over Portland, breaking a 2-2 tie with five third-period goals.
Dominic Zwerger had two goals for the Chiefs, which outshot the short-handed Winterhawks 51-28. Portland has nine players attending NHL camps, while Spokane has three.
