HOCKEY: WHL OK's Portland sale, awards Mem Cup to Brandon

CALGARY, Alberta -- The Western Hockey League announced today its approval the transfer of the Portland Winter Hawks ownership to Bill Gallacher of Avenir Capital Corporation.

The approval included a condition that the Winter Hawks remain in Portland. The franchise has operated in the Rose City since the 1976-77 season.

In other business, the league also announced today that the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Province of Manitoba have been selected to host the 2010 Memorial Cup.

Three clubs -- Brandon, Everett and Kelowna submitted applications to host the 2010 Memorial Cup.  The decision to award the hosting of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup to Brandon was made by a majority vote of the WHL Board of Governors.

The 2009 Memorial Cup will be hosted by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Rimouski Oceanic from May 15-24 in Rimouski, Quebec. The Spokane Chiefs captured the 2008 Memorial Cup by defeating the host Kitchener Rangers last May.
