Connell soccer falls to Highland in semis

The Connell Eagles were looking for a breakthrough at the Class 1A boys soccer semifinals Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.

Unfortunately, Carlos Magana and the Highland Scotties had other plans for them.

Magana scored two goals to lead Highland over Connell 2-0 and into the state championship game for the first time since 2008. The Scotties will face Bellevue Christian, which beat Klahowya 4-3 in a shootout in the other semifinal, at 2 p.m. today.

Meanwhile, Connell — which was seeking its first state title since 2003 — will have to settle for its first trophy finish since taking third in 2009.

The Eagles will take on Klahowya at 10 a.m. today for third place.

Adna 10, DeSales 1: The Pirates put a stop to the Irish’s three-year championship run at the Class 2B state tournament, scoring early and often in a semifinal win. Adna starter Spencer Burdick struck out 12 batters and drove in three runs of his own to help create a comfortable 6-0 cushion by the sixth inning.

The Pirates will play Colfax for the Class 2B title at 1 p.m. today at Wheeler Field in Centralia.

Cameron Richman drove in DeSales’ only run with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
