Tough go for Tri-Cities at Senior Legion state

SELAH -- Throwing a "Black Sunday" label on Day 2 of the Senior American Legion state tournament likely would be too strong.

But the Tri-Cities had a rough go at Carlon Park in Selah.

The Twin City Titans and Kennewick Bandits lost lop-sided championship-bracket games — the Titans getting thumped by Centralia Sobe 12-1 in seven innings, the Bandits going down 17-5 to the Lakeside Recovery, also in seven.

Additionally, the Hanford Flames were eliminated from consolation play with a 4-3 loss to the Spokane Bandits.

Next up for the remaining Tri-City teams are a pair of elimination games today: Kennewick plays district rival Yakima Valley at noon, and Twin City meets Spokane at 3 p.m. in a rematch of the Titans' 22-7 rout last week in the super regionals.

Lakeside 17, Kennewick 5

Errors at inopportune times cost the Bandits, with miscues keeping alive Recovery's five-run third and eight-run fifth. Andrew Kemmerer blasted a three-run shot in hte fifth as Lakeside did most of its damage with two outs in the frame.

Jared Newbry, Clayten Ayers and JJ Hancock each had a pair of hits for Kennewick, which never recovered after falling behind 7-1 after three innings.

Centralia 12, Twin City 1

The Titans never got the offense started against Sobe starter Mason Musselman, who gave up just five hits and one walk while striking out three in seven impressive innings.

Still, Twin City led 1-0 when Centralia exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning. The Titans never got a chance to swing back the momentum after that.

Spokane 4, Hanford 3

Ryan Neal, Jake Browne and Brennen Sutey each had a pair of hits for the Flames, who led 3-1 in the sixth but were undone by a trio of errors.

"They hurt bad," said Hanford co-coach Nat Roe, adding he had his team for five errors. "We didn't play very good defense, and we didn't hit the ball very well."

Spokane starter Tim Yoshihara, who lasted just one inning and walked five in a 22-7 loss to Twin City in the super regional last week, was on top of his control against the Hanford. He still walked five, but spread out over nine innings.

Bear Braich took the loss despite giving up just two earned over eight innings.

"I'm proud to be with this group of battlers," Roe said after the Flames finished 29-20 on the summer. "These guys are tough. They're fun to coach and they're fun to be around."
