Series leaders Steve David and the Oh Boy! Oberto were first on the Columbia River this morning, and they are first — but not by much — in terms of qualifying for Sunday’s Columbia Cup unlimited hydroplane race.
David and the U-6 turned a lap of 160.625 mph, good for a very slim edge on the U-10 Hoss Mortgage Investors. David Bryant steered the boat to a speed of 160.054 mph.
In third was Quebec native Jean Theoret in the U-37 with a speed of 159.145. Next at 149.437 mph was the U-17 Our Gang Racing with Nate Brown aboard.
Fifth place was the U-50 Miss Albert Lee and Brian Perkins at 147.545.

Unlimited qualifying continues this afternoon for the fleet of 13 entries.
Two boats failed to qualify thus far because of rule violations. Dave Villwock prompted the U-1 Ellstrom Elam Plus to produce an NR fuel flow violation. The U-5 Formulaboats.com, driven by Jeff Bernard, was ruled to have a TNR N2 violation.
This is the season debut on the tour for the U-1, the defending Columbia Cup champion and reigning series champion of American Boat Racing Association circuit. The Elam team missed the first three ABRA races this season to focus its efforts on promoting future races in the Middle East and Europe.
David and the U-6, aka Miss Madison, have 3,269 points this season. The U-5 Formulaboats.com is next a 3,239, followed by the U-37 at 2,884.
