The Washington Explosion lost 9-1 to the Miami Stingrays to be eliminated from the ASA 18U Gold National Championship on Friday in Clearwater, Fla.
Warden’s Iris Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a triple and the lone run scored for the Explosion. Connell graduate Ashley Thompson was roughed up a bit, allowing nine runs — seven earned — on 11 hits.

The top 252 junior golfers from Washington, Northern Idaho and Umatilla County will tee it up
July 31-Aug. 2 in the 37th Washington Junior Golf State Championship in Dupont.
The tournament will be hosted by The Home Course in Dupont, Eagles Pride Golf Course and Meadow Park Golf Course.
The Senior Oregon Open Invitational tees off July 30-Aug. 1 at Wildhorse Golf Course in Pendleton.
The field will include past champions Chuck Milne, Rob Gibbons, Fred Haney, Don Bies, Mike Early and Steve Stull.
Moses Lake High graduate Kayla Bernsen will miss the 2013-14 Western Washington women’s basketball season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee while competing in Spokane Hoopfest.
The 6-foot-3 Bernsen, a 2011 Moses Lake graduate, averaged 5.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and blocked 37 shots last year for the Vikings.
Track and field
Eastern Washington sophomore Emma Murillo, a Southridge High graduate, and Michelle Coombs, a Hermiston grad, were selected to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-academic team for the 2012-13 school year.
Central Washington’s Jill McDaniels, of Walla Walla, earned a Great Northwest Athletic Conference faculty athletic representatives’ scholar athlete award for the 2012-13 academic year.
McDaniels, who completed her junior season on the softball diamond and was the GNAC Newcomer of the Year in the sport, finished with a 3.93 GPA.
