Kennewick's Mandell takes second at state amateur

Nick Mandell came into the 87th Washington State Amateur hoping to make the cut.

He did that Wednesday and on Thursday he roared up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for second place, with a three-round total of 221. He shot a 1-over par 73 on Thursday at Chambers Bay in University Place.

“I was really happy with my finish,” the Kennewick native said. “I played very, very well today. The weather was brutal. The course was very tough — I just kept my head in there and did what I needed to do to pull it out.”

Mandell, who graduated from Southridge High earlier this month, shot a 72 in the first round and a 76 in his second round.

“I really just wanted to make the cut,” Mandell said. “On a course I’d never seen before and a very tough course at that, I figured if I can make the cut that would be good.

“Finishing second today is a very big accomplishment in my book and I’m very happy with that.”

Olympia’s Cameron Peck won the title despite shooting a 78 on Thursday. He finished at 216, after firing a pair of 69s in the first two rounds. Mandell tied with Fircrest’s Ryan Earl.

Moses Lake’s Cameron Whittle finished tied for eighth at 227, while Walla Walla’s Ryan Baumgart tied for 23rd at 232 and Kennewick’s Nick Atkin tied for 32nd at 236.

For Mandell this was just the start of a long summer, where he will play a PNGA Men’s Amateur at Bandon Dunes in Oregon, a U.S. Amateur qualifier and multiple other tournaments in the Northwest.

“This is a very good start to a busy summer,” he said. “I’m still kind of shocked. I’m very pleased with what went down this week. It’s a very good sign for the next few tournaments. It gives me some more confidence and shows that I belong with everyone else.”
