Othello graduate Natilee Ruiz finished 45th in the women's 200-meter individual medley preliminaries Wednesday in Omaha, Neb., at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
The top 16 advance to the semifinal round. Ruiz's time of 2 minutes, 18.57 seconds was 6.19 seconds behind leader Caitlin Leverenz. The 16th-place finisher, Annie Zhu, was timed at 2:15.75.
Auburn's Ariana Kukors, who holds the world record in the event at 2:06.15, was third at 2:13.58. Kukors graduated from Auburn Mountainview High School in 2007 and then swam for one year at the University of Washington, where she earned three top-five finishes at the 2008 NCAA championships.
Kukors' sister Mattie was 31st, finishing in 2:17.77.
Ruiz and Richland swimmer Lisa Bratton will compete Saturday in the women's 200 backstroke. Also that day, former Richland standout Cody Roberts, now at UNLV, will swim in the men's 100 butterfly.
