More than 80 senior citizens are descending on Walla Walla this weekend for the second annual Eastern Washington Senior Games, a competition for athletes 50 and older in a variety of sports.
The games, staged by the Walla Walla YMCA, began Friday with handball. The 10-day event features an array of events to provide friendly competition and encourage seniors to become more physically fit.
Last year’s inaugural event drew about 80 participants. This year, they senior game are on track to surpass that mark.
The games are one of four regional events sanctioned by the Washington State Senior Games, with the Washington State Senior Games planned in Olympia on July 26-29. That event is a qualifier for the 2013 Summer National Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio.
Events this weekend include basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, track and field, road running, handball, racquetball and cycling. The pickleball tournament is the next weekend, June 29-July 1.
New events this year include the standing long jump, regular long jump, shot put and softball throw.
