WALLA WALLA -- The Wheatland Wheelers Cycling Club will play host to the sevent annual Ann Weatherill Cycling Classic on Saturday in Walla Walla.
The event was created to honor the memory of Garrison Middle School teacher Ann Weatherill, who was struck and killed by an oncoming motorist during a group bike ride on State Highway 124 between Prescott and Waitsburg on Mother's Day in 2004.
The race features three routes of 30, 62 or 100 miles. All participants are required to wear a bicycle helmet and are strongly encouraged to use sunscreen and carry a water bottle.
The 100-mile ride starts at 7 a.m., the 62-mile ride starts at 8 a.m. and the 30-mile ride starts at 9 a.m.
Entry fee is $45 and includes the cost of the finish-line celebration. Riders can register on the morning of the event at Pioneer Park or online at www.active.com by searching for Ann Weatherill Cycling Classic.
Proceeds benefit the Blue Mountain Foundation's Ann Fund and the promotion of bicycle safety programs in the Walla Walla valley.
