U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo, right, and forward Abby Wambach were nominated Tuesday for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year award, competing with five-time winner Marta of Brazil.
Japan, the 2011 Women's World Cup winner, has Homare Sawa, the player of the tournament, and Aya Miyama on the shortlist of 10 candidates. U.S. forward Alex Morgan also was nominated.
FIFA and France Football magazine will reveal the final three candidates Dec. 5.
Meanwhile, Solo's Dancing With the Stars journey continues.
The Richland native and her pro partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, survived Tuesday night's elimination. Chaz Bono and pro partner Lacey Schwimmer were voted off the ABC show.
