Sun Downs meet resumes in Kennewick

KENNEWICK -- The 10-day horse racing meet at Sun Downs resumes this weekend with days 3 and 4 set for today and Sunday.

Today's highlight should be the $2,550 Sun Downs Speed Sprint at 250 yards in the ninth.

Hannibal Lector, who bolted straight out of the gate and was never threatened last Saturday to win the Boekenoogen Memorial, should be the favorite for this race. However, Eyes Okey, a 9-year-old gelding owned by Albert Renteria, won this race last year and is the oddsmaker's favorite.

Mo Cash Billy Bob, who finished second in last week's Boekenoogen, is also in the race.

Today, there will be two Dick Monahan American Quarter Horse Association Maiden Challenge trials at 350 yards.

Twelve horses are vying for spots in the finals in a race to honor Monahan, who passed away in December.

Monahan was an attorney from Walla Walla who was the president of the Northern Racing Quarter Horse Association from 1987 to 1993, and was an AQHA director from Washington for 20 years. In 2007, Monahan was elected to the NAQHA Executive Committee.

First post today is at 1:30 p.m.

Trey Fecta: Trey's feeling pretty good after the first weekend. A down Saturday was erased by a good Sunday, and the original (and imaginary) bankroll of $500 is down to $496.

So for today, let's start with $5 across the board on Rocadee, and don't forget the $2 first half of the Daily Double.

Trey's picking Shall I Be First for the second half of the daily double in the second race. He's also doing an exacta box with Shall I Be First, Traffitina and Cowboys Wrangler.

In the third, it's a $4 quinella with Swiss Ace and Im Pure Country.

For the fourth, he's boxing a trifecta of Two Lic Tryn, Macadeucy and Comanche Moon.

In the fifth, Buford Tucker is the pick at $2 across the board.

Trudy's Bianca and Cleve Steal get a $2 exacta box in the sixth, while Brakeman and Witchonachopper are put together for a $5 quinella in the seventh.

Trey is taking Lucky Thirteen in the first half of the late double in the ninth, and boxing him with Billy Stark and Quatro for a trifecta.

Finally, in the ninth, Hannibal Lector gets the call for the second half of the late double. Plus he's taking $5 across the board on Hannibal Lector.

That's $77 in wagers.
