German man, 32, wins Tri-Cities Marathon by 27 seconds (w/ gallery)

KENNEWICK -- Kjell Schioberg, 32, a native of Hamburg, Germany, edged out Cory Soulliard of Hamilton, Mont., by 27 seconds, finishing in two hours, 56 minutes, 22 seconds to win the 30th running of the Tri-Cities Marathon.

Schioberg, who lives in Moscow, Idaho, won his first-ever marathon five months ago in Coeur d'Alene.

Elizabeth Medford of Puyallup won the women's race in 3:27.42, beating Staci Verbrugge (3:30.39) of Yakima by nearly 3 minutes.

Kennewick's Kyle Sturdefant, 18, was the top local finisher and only one of three racers to finish in under 3 hours. Sturdefant, who will enter the Air Force next month, crossed the line in 2:58.41.

Shir Regev was the top local women's finisher for the second straight year, finishing fifth with a time of 3:39.36.
