Marshall plays escape artist, Volcanoes shut out Dust Devils
Mac Marshall, Nolan Riggs and Patrick Ruotolo combined to throw a four-hit shutout as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes beat the Tri-City Dust Devils 2-0 Monday at Gesa Stadium.
Mac Marshall started for the Volcanoes (11-14) and was the definition of effectively wild, scattering eight walks over his four innings while striking out seven Dust Devils (9-16). The Dust Devils loaded the bases against Marshall in the first, third and fourth, and had runners on first and second in the second inning.
The Dust Devils went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 men on base.
Riggs (3-0) picked up the win with his four innings of three-hit relief, and Ruotolo picked up his third save by throwing a hitless ninth.
Ashford Fulmer hit a little-league home run in the top of the first as a fielding error by right fielder Luis Asuncion and a throwing error by second baseman Nate Easley allowed him to touch ‘em all to put Salem-Keizer up 1-0.
Fulmer scored on a Gio Brusa triple in the sixth to score the game’s second and final run.
The Dust Devils and Volcanoes will play the fourth game of their five-game set at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
