Tri-City Dust Devils

Plenty of offense, lacking defense leads to Dust Devils win

Defense was in short supply Saturday night in Boise as the Dust Devils and Hawks combined to commit 9 errors in a 10-6 Tri-City victory.

A night after the Dust Devils nine-hitter Wilfri De La Cruz hit a home run and double, Tri-City’s eightth-hitting left fielder Manny DeLeon went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs.

The Dust Devils (7-9, second half) used a four-run top of the second to get some breathing room from the Hawks (6-10), and then never looked back. A fielding error by shortstop Garrett Hampson opened the scoring in the frame, then Nate Easley drove in another run with a single through the right side. Chris Baker capped the inning with a two-RBI base hit that scored De La Cruz and Easley to give the Dust Devils an early 5-0 lead.

Boise tried to climb back into the game in the seventh against fresh reliever Diomar Lopez. Garrett Hampson hit a two-run triple, which was aided by a throwing error by right fielder Luis Asuncion, then Jacob Bosiokovich ripped a one-out double and was driven in on a shallow sacrifice fly by Wesley Jones. Nathan Foriest came in to relieve Lopez with two outs and two on, and got Anthony Brito to ground into a fielder’s choice to keep the Dust Devils up 8-6.

Will Headean (3-4) battled in spite lackluster defensive support to work through a six-inning start and pick up the win. Headean gave up five hits and allowed three runs — one was earned — while striking out six.

The Dust Devils will try to continue keeping pace with the Northwest League North division-leading Everett AquaSox (11-4) in the middle game of their five-game series against the Hawks at 6:15 p.m. Sunday. Hansel Rodriguez (RHP, 0-0, 3.00 ERA) is expected to make his second start in the Padres organization.
