Dust Devils lose to Eugene but stay in control of their division

The Tri-City Dust Devils drew first blood Thursday, but it was the Eugene Emeralds who ended the night with a victory at Gesa Stadium.

Tri-City’s G.K. Young opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single in the third, and that lead was short-lived. Eugene put up three runs in the fourth and went on to beat the Dust Devils 4-2.

Tri-City (15-12) has a one-game lead in the Northwest League North division over Everett and Vancouver, who both lost Thursday night. Eugene (18-9) has a comfortable five-game advantage in the South.

Eugene’s fourth-inning flurry came against Tri-City starter Emmanuel Ramirez (3-1). With one out, Wladimir Galindo hit an RBI double to right field, and Kevonte Mitchell smacked a two-run single to left.

Ramirez allowed four hits and struck out seven in his six innings of work.

Dalton Erb pitched two innings of relief for the Dust Devils, allowing another RBI double to Galindo in the eighth. Will Stillman pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Dust Devils’ final run of the game came in the seventh, when Josh Magee grounded into a double play and Westhers Magdaleno scored.

Tri-City had five hits off Eugene starter Jose Paulino (3-0), but he finished with eight strikeouts. Relievers Wyatt Short, Michael Knighton and Jared Cheek combined to allow one hit the rest of the way. Cheek recorded his fifth save of the season.

The teams will continue their five-game series at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Gesa Stadium. Eugene and Tri-City each have one win in the series.
