NWL: Hillsboro tops Tri-City in extras
Josh Anderson delivered a walk-off single Friday night to end an 11-inning pitchers’ duel and give the Hillsboro Hops the 2-1 victory over the visiting Tri-City Dust Devils in the rubber match of a five-game series.
The Dust Devils (13-9) still gained ground for the day. They led the NWL North by two games after the Everett AquaSox were swept in a doubleheader against the Eugene Emeralds.
After not plating a run since the bottom of the first inning, Hillsboro (10-12) wasted no time putting up the winning run against fresh Tri-City reliever Chasen Ford (0-1) in the 11th. The Hops led off the bottom of the inning with two singles and a walk before Anderson smacked the walk-off base knock.
Hops starter Tyler Mark allowed Tri-City’s only score of the game in the second, but he was otherwise dominant, giving up just four hits and striking out eight over 7 1/3 innings. The Hops also got some brilliant relief work from Taylor Wright, Jake Winston and Tucker Ward (1-2), who combined to give up just one hit in their 3 2/3 innings.
Taylor Kohlwey, the Division III Player of the Year at Wisconsin-LaCrosse, gave the Tri-City offense some life in the top of the second. He drew a leadoff walk, stole second and then scored on a two-out single by Westhers Magdaleno to tie the score at 1.
Despite giving up a run on three hits in the top of the first, Tim Berry’s (0-0) debut with the Dust Devils was smooth, albeit short. He gave up one more hit and walked a batter in his three-inning start.
Angel Mejia, who was replaced in the rotation by Berry, came on in a long relief role in the fourth and dazzled. He twirled five shutout innings and allowed just one hit to keep the Dust Devils in the game.
The Dust Devils will conclude their road trip with a three game series against the Vancouver Canadians beginning Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
