The Tri-City Dust Devils had enough of a cushion from an early offensive onslaught to withstand Spokane’s ninth-inning rally, beating the host Indians 8-4 on Wednesday night.
After putting up one run in the bottom of the first, Spokane (13-14) did not score again until the final inning.
With one out and the Dust Devils leading 8-1, the Indians loaded the bases with two singles and a walk off Tri-City closer Wilson Santos. After Jamie Potts’ RBI single, Santos got Tyler Sanchez to pop out to short. Sherman Lacrus followed with a two-run single to pull Spokane within 8-4, but Santos finally shut the door by striking out Diego Cedeno.
Jose Carlos Urena had a two-run double among his three RBIs, and Austin Allen hit a three-run double in the fifth for the Dust Devils (15-12).
Elvin Liriano (2-0) allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief for Tri-City, which will meet Spokane at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Avista Stadium in the second game of the three-game series.
