Washington goes 3-for-3, Dust Devils rally late for win over Indians
Jalen Washington was a home run shy of the cycle and scored a run in the Tri-City Dust Devils three-run bottom of the eighth as a late rally propelled them to a 5-3 victory Sunday night over the Spokane Indians at Gesa Stadium.
The middle of the three-game series was Monday. After Tuesday’s finale, the teams head to Spokane to play three more.
Starter Ben Scheckler gave up the game’s first run to Spokane in the top of the second, but Washington tied it back up with an RBI triple in the sixth. Both teams scored a run in the seventh to tie it at 2-all, then Matthew Batten led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, Washington was hit by a pitch and Aldemar Burgos reached on a bunt base hit to load the bases. A walk brought home Batten, and the other two runs came around on sacrifice flies by Luis Almanzar and Kelvin Melean.
Andres Munoz gave up a run in the top of the ninth on a two-out double by Kole Enright, but the tying run never got out of the batter’s box as Munoz struck out Nick Kaye to get the save.
The Dust Devils stayed even with the first-half Northwest League North Division champion Vancouver Canadians atop the second-half standings with 13 regular season games to go. The Dust Devils held a six-game lead over Spokane and the Everett AquaSox in overall record, which will determine the second North playoff berth if Vancouver wins both halves.
