Benson’s 2-RBI double propels Dust Devils to 4-3 win over AquaSox
Tyler Benson smoked a two-run double in the top of the fifth inning to give the Tri-City Dust Devils their first lead in a 4-3 victory Saturday night over the Everett AquaSox to finish the four-game series level.
Tri-City (14-10 second half, 34-28 overall) returned to Gesa Stadium on Sunday after winning two in a row to face another Northwest League North Division rival, the Spokane Indians, for a three-game series.
Luis Asuncion stroked a pair of doubles and swiped home on a double steal with Tre Carter in the sixth inning, and Fred Schlichtholz (4-1) picked up the win by dealing three innings of one-hit, shutout ball to drop his ERA to 0.86.
Everett (12-12, 29-33) got on the board first on an RBI groundout by Aaron Stroosma in the fourth. Tri-City took a 3-1 lead on Benson’s double and Asuncion’s steal, but the AquaSox tied it on a two-run single by Joe Venturino in the seventh.
Chris Mattison drove in Kelvin Melean for the eventual game-winning score in the top of the eighth with a groundout to short.
