Tri-City Dust Devils

Four Dust Devil pitchers combine for shutout in series opener

The Tri-City Dust Devils got their three-game road trip abroad off to a good start Tuesday night as four pitchers combined to shut out the host Vancouver Canadians for a 3-0 win in the series opener.

Ben Sheckler (2-2) got things started for Tri-City (8-5 second half, 28-23 overall) by scattering six hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings. Travis Radke and Andres Munoz each gave up a walk over the next 2 1/3 innings, and Fred Schlichtholz picked up his second save by working a 1-2-3 ninth.

Matthew Batten — 6-for-15 (.400) in his first four games with the Dust Devils — hit a one-out double in the fourth, then came around to score the only run Tri-City would need on a single by Tyler Benson. Batten later drove in Chris Mattison on a sacrifice fly in the sixth for the team’s second run.

The Dust Devils pulled within a game of the Northwest League North Division-leading Spokane Indians (9-4, 25-26) in the second-half standings. Vancouver (6-7, 27-24) took the first-half title from Tri-City by a game, meaning it’s already secured a spot in the NWL playoffs.
