Connell, Royal, Ki-Be pace East wrestling regional

CONNELL -- Connell, Royal and Kiona-Benton placed third, fourth and fifth Saturday as Zillah edged Granger by seven points for the SCAC 1A regional title in Connell.

The top four in each weight advance to next weekend's Mat Classic in Tacoma.

Among Ki-Be's contingent will be a pair of regional champs: Matt McCallum won the 130 title, while Garrett Whitney needed just 54 seconds to win the crown at 189. Teammates David Gonzalez (119) and Cody Zyph (215) placed second.

Royal finished with a pair of champions as well, Danny Barajas at 119 and Omar Gomez at 140.

Connell didn't win any titles but had three runners-up, including Jacob Rae, who lost 11-4 in the 160 final to Zillah's Chris Castillo, a three-time state champ.

River View's Chance Watt accounted for the area's other title, winning at 135.

Eastern Washington 2A regional

ELLENSBURG -- Joey Gomez scored Othello's lone title as the Huskies finished a distant second to state favorite Deer Park in Ellensburg.

Gomez defeated teammate Albert Vargas 6-3 in the 189 final, providing two of Othello's seven state qualifiers. Vargas advanced to the final by knocking off Grandview's Adam Morales 3-2 in the semifinals.

Eddie Garza nearly gave the Huskies another champion, losing 4-2 in overtime to Deer Park's Billy Rhoads. Matt Jordan was second at 135, losing 4-2 to Quincy's Manny Ybarra in another close bout between the two state placers.

Returning state champ Amando Deleon (160) and Stephen Villarreal (215) finished third, while Anthony Barrera was fourth at 103.

Prosser moved a pair through to state. Irving Jaimez won the title at 125 with a 4-0 decision over Cheney's Duncan Rhoades, and Ethan Groom place third at 145.

Martin Torres finished fourth at 285 for Grandview's only state berth.

REARDAN -- Dropping into the 2B/1B ranks for the first time, Warden ran away with the team title and is primed to win state.

The Cougars will send 13 to state. Among them regional champions Javier Tapia at 112, J.P. Martinez at 119 and Samuel Suarez at 140. Also, Hector Camacho was runner-up at 152.

Eastern Washington girls

CONNELL -- Kennewick's Hannah Moon won the title at 130, while Kiona-Benton's Sheridan McDonald remained on course to become the state's first four-time girls champion.

McDonald won the the 130 regional title in Connell with a 17-0 technical fall in the final. Teammate Amy Campbell pinned her way to the title at 140.

Warden won the team title with 171 points, easily outdistancing second-place Sunnyside (1011/2), the only two teams that can field a full squad. Othello placed fourth with 62 points.

Moon scored a pair of quick pins (48 and 20 seconds) and then won 9-2 in the final against Warden's Miexy Gonzales. Moon was the first girl from the Tri-Cities to place at the girls state tournament, finishing fourth last season. She'll be joined by teammate Julie Rivera, who placed third at 285.

Warden's Carter Marks (152) and Sunnyside's Yunuenn Garcia (119) also won titles, as did Othello's Cassandra Garza, literally in a class by herself as the only wrestler at 171 pounds.

Chiawana Riverhawks in Pasco won the school’s first-ever state team title in addition getting the first three individual state champs in school history at the WIAA event in Tacoma.
