Southridge matmen win city battle

KENNEWICK -- Between them, Kamiakin, Kennewick and Southridge had exactly one league win coming into Tuesday night's Battle of the Bone tri-dual at the Lions Den.

But not even a tough season in the CBBN 3A can take the sheen off this annual get-together.

Not when they're chasin' the bone.

Connor Rosane, Kevin DelAngel, Julio Aleman and Matt Gibson scored a pair of pins for Southridge, and three more teammates swept their matches to pace the Suns to a 51-18 win over Kennewick and 49-27 win over Kamiakin.

"We've been looking forward to it all year," said Rosane, who scored a pair of quality wins at 140 pounds with pins of Kamiakin's Derrick Cooley and Kennewick's Brock Schuh. "Last year Kennewick upset us. It's a pretty big deal for us."

Teammate Andrew Godinez, who won twice at 152, said he felt like he had an even bigger stake in the matchup of Kennewick's three high schools.

"It was a huge deal for me this year," he said. "Last year I lost to a Kennewick kid and we lost to them because of it, so I really wanted to come here and win both my matches.

"It feels incredible to know that we're able to come out against our cross-city rivals and compete. We have a lot of young guys who came out tonight brawling."

Kennewick topped Kamiakin 40-30 in the other dual.

Michael Hosfield dominated his match at 112 for a 12-0 win, while Nathan Ottley (152), Alex Ruby (160), Oscar Mascorro (215) and Robby Calvert (285) deliver pins.

Javier Pereyda (145) and Sisto Santa Pina (171) delivered pins for the Braves, and Cooley topped Schuh 12-8.

Pina, a state veteran, looks fully recovered from a knee injury that cost him the first month of his sophomore season.

He finished both his matches in the first round.

Godinez and Ottley tangled in the most entertaining match of the night, a 23-21 decision for Godinez that included a combined 11 reversals and 14 back points.

"I was just trying to keep my head," Godinez said. "When I got reversed, just go get the points back."

The match between Rosane and Cooley, bumping up a weight, was equally back-and-forth despite ending in the second period.

The pair tangled through several scrambles after Cooley got the opening takedown.

Rosane started down in the second period and reversed to a 3-2 lead.

He managed to bar Cooley's left arm and eventually stretch him out for the pin midway through the period.

"That's the way I like to wrestle," said Cooley, who has frequently bumped up to 140 but plans on sticking at 135 for the postseason. "It's fun having that fast-paced scrambling.

"He's tough."

For Rosane, it was a chance to get matches against two quality opponents.

"I was hoping to get both those guys," he said, crediting an offseason spent freestyling and attending wrestling camps for his rise among the top guys in his weight in the Mid-Columbia.

"I was tired of getting beat by the tough kids."
