Hanford holds off KeHS in volleyball opener

RICHLAND -- Hanford won a tight match with Kennewick in both teams' season and CBBN 3A openers Tuesday at Hanford.

Nikki Eldred's 25 kills and three aces led the Falcons to the 25-21, 28-26, 24-26, 27-25 victory.

"It was a good game," Hanford coach McKenzie Garberg said. "We started off a few games strong and let Kennewick get the better of us, playing their game. Kennewick came out fighting, but we were able to finish strong."

Sophie Clinton had 19 kills for the Lions, who lost in head coach Julie Maciboba's debut.

West Valley 3, Southridge 0

KENNEWICK -- Emma Spurlock and Kenzie Mix had five kills apiece for host Southridge but the team failed to overcome a powerful West Valley team and the Suns fell 25-7, 25-14, 25-16 in a CBBN 3A contest.

"Our passing game was OK, but our offense was struggling," Southridge coach John Lengphounpraseut said. "But at the same time West Valley is as good as last year, or better. A very balanced team."

The Rams finished third at state in 2010.

KENNEWICK -- Amanda Miller did a little of everything for the Braves with 12 kills, seven digs and three aces on 13-for-13 serving as Kamiakin won its CBBN 3A opener at home.

Kylie Iverson and Sierra Linke had four kills apiece to lead the Bulldogs.

WALLA WALLA -- The Riverhawks held off hard-charging Blue Devils team in both teams' season and CBBN 4A openers in Walla Walla.

Sadie Sparks' 13 kills, 19 digs, three blocks and four aces led Chiawana.

Chantelle Zamora's six kills and 13 digs led the Blue Devils.

YAKIMA -- The Bombers opened the regular season and CBBN 4A play with a sweep at the Cadets.

Alisha Bettinson led the way with 11 kills, six digs and an ace, while Charlene Manning added eight kills and six digs for Richland (1-0, 1-0).

GRANDVIEW -- Payton Parrish had nine kills, eight digs, 14 assists and 14 service points to help guide Grandview to a nonleague sweep of visiting Prosser.

Becca Niemeyer had 18 digs for the Mustangs, and Makinsi Garoutte and Klaire Childers had three kills apiece.

FINLEY -- The Patriots rallied for a wild nonleague victory in Finley.

Deborah Croskrey's four kills and 11 aces led Liberty Christian (1-0), while Sidney Higgins added five kills. Katie Wilhelm led the Panthers (0-1) with three kills and four aces.
