The Royal Knights boys soccer team rebounded from an emotional semifinal loss Friday to beat Ridgefield 3-2 in the third-fourth place game Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
Cesar Bernal scored for Royal in the 23rd minute off assists from Enrique Torres and Alex Ramirez to put the Knights up 1-0.
The score remained close for the next 50 minutes until Ramirez hit a volley that curved into the upper corner of the Ridgefield net to make it 2-0 Royal with just seven minutes left in the game.
Brian Gallardo, who had to come out of the game yesterday after suffering a sudden allergic reaction, scored the Knights’ final goal in the 75th minute to secure the win.
“Today we scored goals,” said Royal coach Jens Jensen after the Knights’ second consecutive third-place finish at state. “The reality is, winning a state championship is hard. You can have everything go right, but if one thing goes wrong, you’re done. You need some things to go your way.”
Jensen said the team rebounded well after letting two one-goal leads slip away against Chelan on Friday.
“I think the whole team played well. The whole thing was we just really wanted to go out and play,” Jensen said. “Win or lose, I really didn’t care. I just wanted us to show each other that, hey, we can play.”
