Chiawana soccer eliminated by LC

PASCO -- The Chiawana girls soccer team made a strong showing in its first-ever state appearance Tuesday night, but fifth-ranked Lewis and Clark secured the 2-0 shutout in the first round of the 4A state tournament.

The Riverhawks appeared to convert a scoring chance in the first two minutes when Lexi Miller put one past Tigers goalkeeper Sarah Wood.

But an offsides flag disallowed the goal.

Two minutes later, Julia Moravec gave LC a 1-0 lead.

"It was an odd momentum shift. We went from a real big emotional high to a low," said Hawks coach Rich Zoller. "We did have some other chances. I'd say we had eight solid chances on frame. We just didn't finish."

Moravec added another goal in the 21st minute to secure the Tigers a spot in the 4A quarterfinals, where they will play at Kentwood.

Lakeside 5, Kiona-Benton 1

SPOKANE -- Ashley Cook-Cox recorded a first-half hat trick to lift Lakeside over Kiona-Benton in a first-round matchup in the 1A state tournament in Spokane.

The Eagles (13-4-1) will play today's Newport-La Salle winner in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Ki-Be coach Marty Martinez said the game was a little more physical than the Bears (14-5) were used to and the fans were unusually raucous, which may have rattled his team a bit.

But it didn't break them.

"The excitement and enthusiasm even after getting beat was incredible," Martinez said. "You'd think there would be a bunch of crying, but these girls were like, 'Wait 'til we come back next year.' "
