November 06, 2015 11:04 PM

The Kennewick Lions pulled off the upset Friday night, going into Joe Albi Stadium and knocking off Mt. Spokane 34-32 in a Class 3A regional football playoff game.

The victory gives Kennewick a home playoff game in the first round of the state playoffs next Saturday. The Lions will play either Lake Washington or Wilson of Tacoma. Those two teams meet tonight.

Friday’s victory was highlighted by Kennewick quarterback Dillon Plew, who was 24 of 34 for 258 yards and six touchdown passes.

He connected with seven receivers.

Trailing 21-20 at halftime, and then 24-20 in the third quarter, the Lions took the lead for good when Plew hit Raymond Gutierrez on a fade route for a 10-yard TD pass and a 27-24 edge.

The Lions then made it 34-24 when Plew hit Andrew Townsend on an 8-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.

Mt. Spokane rallied with a 21-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 34-30.

The Lions had the ball deep in their own territory in the waning seconds, when they decided to take a safety, surrendering 2 points but running the clock out for the victory.

Thursday games

MEAD 78, HANFORD 21: Hanford trailed by three with just under 4 minutes left in the second quarter, but Mead scored 28 unanswered points in 3 1/2 minutes en route to a win in their District 5/8 crossover football game at Fran Rish Stadium.

Hanford freshman Josh Fonner scored on a quarterback keeper for the first score of the game, giving the Falcons a 7-0 lead with 9 minutes left in the first quarter.

“I thought we came out and started strong. Usually, it’s kind of the opposite for us. We fought well for the first quarter and a half,” Hanford coach Brett Jay said. “We moved the ball well on our first drive. We mixed the run and the pass well.”

Mead countered with 24 quick points to go ahead 24-7, but Tayvonne Miller, the Falcons’ sophomore running back, scored from 11 yards out to pull Hanford within 24-14.

Fonner then found Miller on a 37-yard touchdown pass to make it 24-21 Mead halfway through the second quarter.

“We were able to throw some seams,” Jay said. “They put a lot of pressure on us, but their defensive backs played pretty tight, so we were able to work the middle of the field a little.”

Then the bottom fell out for Hanford.

A Falcons error on a kickoff return led to one Mead touchdown, and then the Panthers picked off a Fonner pass on the next drive and returned it for a touchdown to lead 38-21. Mead tacked on two more scores in the final three minutes of the half to take a 52-21 lead.

The Panthers’ backup units shut out Hanford 26-0 in the second half, handing the Falcons their fifth consecutive loss.

Still, Hanford capped its best season in three years, finishing 4-6 — doubling its victory total from the previous two seasons combined.
