Richland rolls by Evergreen 31-12

RICHLAND -- With his team 3-0, you'd think Richland football coach Mike Neidhold would be brimming with confidence.

You'd be wrong.

"I just wish we'd played cleaner tonight," Neidhold said after his team defeated Evergreen of Vancouver 31-12.

Richland was penalized 10 times and had two touchdowns called back because of penalties.

While the Bombers might have been inconsistent on offense generally, at least two Richland players had a career night against the stubborn Plainsmen from southwestern Washington.

Elijah Gardaya caught eight passes for 142 yards, including 113 in the first half alone. The 5-foot-7 senior made two spectacular plays on short passes from Colter Quick to set up Richland's second touchdown.

Also, Cameron Simpson filled in for injured starter B.K. Robinson with a career high 162 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

"Cameron did a good job filling in for Robinson, "Neidhold said. "Our offensive line played well too."

Richland jumped on the Plainsmen early. After a low snap from center, Evergreen punter John Veeder inadvertently downed the ball on his own 5-yard line. Sheldon Liikala caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Quick on the next play, with 10:11 left in the first quarter.

Richland went up 21-0 when Connor Egbert caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Quick to finish off an 80-yard, 13-play drive with 2:08 left in the first half.

After Jamaree Jones scored Evergreen's first touchdown at the 10:04 mark of the third quarter, Egbert returned the kickoff 47 yards to the Evergeen 49. Simpson set up his second touchdown with a 38-yard run to the Plainsman 1. He scored with 8:29 left in the third period from that spot three plays later.

Evergreen scored once more, on an 8-yard run by Justin Straup with 6:10 left in the game.

After Richland recovered Evergreen's onside kick, Q Taycheck kicked a 40-yard field goal with 3:31 left in the game.

While Gardaya and Simpson were the statistical stars for the Bombers, Quick had another solid game at quarterback. The senior completed 16 of 30 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
