2011 preview: Eastmont Wildcats

Here is a preview of the Eastmont Wildcats for the 2011 CBBN 3A football season:

Coach: Doug McGill (8th year, 25-45).

Last league title: 1999.

Last playoff berth: 2008.

Home field: Wildcat Stadium.

Returning starters

QB Lucas McGill, Sr. (6-3, 200); WR-DE Berlie Walker, Sr., (6-3, 170); WR-DB John Wehrer, Sr., (5-7, 170).

Others to watch: RB-S Darin Hardgrove, Jr. (5-11, 175); OL-DL Austin Port, So.; WR Dallin McDonnell, Jr. (6-2, 170).

Quick hits

* Lost 31 seniors from last year's league runner-up, the first time the Wildcats finished over .500 in Coach McGill's tenure. Also, second-team all-league DB Trea Thomas did not turn out so he could concentrate on basketball.

* Lucas McGill is a legitimate two-way threat, running for 601 yards and 6 TDs last season and throwing for 1,068 yards and 9 TDs. However, he needs to cut down on INTs (10) and raise accuracy (48.5 percent).

* Defense will be built around Walker, a first-teamer at linebacker moving to DE. Replacing its physical front line will be Eastmont's biggest task.

Like all inexperienced teams, the Wildcats' fate will be tied directly to how quickly the offensive and defensive lines mature. If the line play is solid, they will have the weapons to contend.
