Prep roundup for Sept. 30: Southridge defeats Hanford in Mid-Columbia Conference volleyball

Makenna Behrens had 13 kills and 33 digs as the Southridge volleyball team opened the second half of Mid-Columbia Conference play Wednesday night with a 25-22, 25-9, 23-25, 25-14 road win over Hanford.

Maddisen McNeill and Riley Hebdon added 11 kills each for Southridge, which let Hanford back into the match after leading in the third game.

“We need to learn to finish out the match,” Suns coach John Lengphounpraseut said.

Kalyn Smith had 21 digs, and Rose Dimmick finished with 10 kills for Hanford.

The Richland Bombers (3-1 overall) moved up a spot to No. 8 in The Associated Press Class 4A state poll after last week’s 45-7 romp over Hanford.

Class 1A Royal (4-0) and Class 1B Liberty Christian (4-0) continued to lead their respective polls, while Prosser (4-0) stayed at No. 2 in the Class 2A poll.

Connell (3-1) was sixth in the 1A rankings, while Touchet (3-0) remained at No. 3 in 1B.

▪ Hanford (3-1 overall, 1-1 MCC) will visit Southridge (1-3, 0-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lampson Stadium.

Hanford junior quarterback Desmond Samples leads the Mid-Columbia Conference with 844 passing yards. He has thrown seven touchdowns against three interceptions and has a 48.9 completion percentage (68-for-139).

Meanwhile, the Falcons will try to stop the Suns’ run-first offense, led by Zayid Al-Ghani, Samuel Kori and Ricky Anaya. Southridge has rushed for 819 yards and passed for 145.
