RICHLAND -- Emma Sanders had 13 points for Southridge and the Suns built upon a 12-2 halftime lead to survive an anemic CBBN 3A battle for the district No. 5 seed Tuesday at Hanford with a 31-10 besting of Kennewick.
"Both teams' offenses were really tight," Southridge coach Scott Stiles said. "And both defenses played well. There wasn't a lot of offensive flow in the game, in the first half."
But Southridge, which went 7-for-11 from the free-throw line, broke through the malaise in the third quarter, outscoring Kennewick 12-2 to blow the game open.
"Emma Sanders, and Lauren Mickelsen, hit a 3 and that kind of gave us a push," Stiles said of his team's third quarter awakening.
Southridge will play a district tournament elimination game against West Valley at 7 p.m. Friday in Yakima.
Kennewick will face Pasco at 6 p.m. today at Kamiakin in an elimination game for the No. 6 seed to the district tournament.
"It's a relief on our part that we came out with a victory," Stiles said. "We knew the consequences if we lost. We can breathe a little bit for a day."
