Connell girls in SCAC semis after OT win

CONNELL -- Connell's Kayla Bjorge and Goldendale's Lexi Cameron tied for game-high honors with 17 points apiece, but ultimately it was the Eagles who had the edge in an SCAC district tournament overtime win, 44-43, against the visiting Timberwolves.

Connell was down five for much of overtime, but Brooke Gibbons hit a 3-pointer with 1:20 remaining to initiate the comeback and Bjorge supplemented her teammate's attack with a 3-pointer of her own with 5 seconds to go for the win.

Connell will play a championship semifinal at 8 p.m. Saturday against Granger at Zillah Middle School.

ZILLAH 54, MABTON 49

MABTON -- The Leapords used a big third quarter to knock off the host Vikings in the first round of the SCAC district tournament.

Zillah (12-9) outscored Mabton 23-10 in the third quarter and held off a rally from there.

"We were playing without one of our best players (Crysta Reynolds)," Mabton coach Chris McCallum said. "I'm proud of our girls and the way they came out and played."

Alisi Uasike scored 16 points to lead Zillah. Veronica Vasquez scored 23 points to lead Mabton (12-9), which will face River View in an elimination game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zillah Middle School.

The Spartans opened the SCAC district tournament with an easy victory over the Bears.

Granger led 48-24 after three quarters, as Lyndsay Oswalt's 19 points led three in double figures.

Yesenia Torres' 16 points led Kiona-Benton (15-6), which will face Goldendale at 4 p.m. Saturday at Zillah Middle School in an elimination game.

Granger (18-3) will face Connell at 8 p.m. at Zillah Middle School in a championship semifinal.

YAKIMA -- The Lightning continued their perfect season with an easy victory against the Panthers in the first round of the SCAC district tournament.

Savannah Bonny's 20 points led La Salle (21-0), while Kim Gier's nine points led River View (10-12).

River View will face Mabton at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zillah Middle School in an elimination game.
