River View girls get No. 4 seed

MATTAWA -- The River View girls basketball team grabbed the No. 4 seed into the SCAC district playoffs, beating Columbia-Burbank 51-42 in a district play-in game in Mattawa.

The Panthers (10-11) will earn a first-round district matchup against the SCAC West top seed, La Salle (20-0) at 7 p.m. tonight at West Valley High School.

Mallory Smith scored a game-high 18 points to lead four Panthers' players in double figures. Smith and Kim Gier combined to hit 12-of-13 free throws as River View hit 20-of-25 as a team from the stripe.

"Honestly, that was the difference. They put us on the line and fouled the right people," said Panthers' coach Bruce Moore. "Our goal all season has been 70 percent (free throws). To hit 80 percent is a nice little gift."

River View trailed 12-11 after the first quarter but held the Coyotes to just 2 points in the second quarter and took a 19-14 halftime lead.

"They did a good job applying a full-court press, and we did a good job switching up a number of different zones, " Moore said.

RIVER VIEW -- Mallory Smith 18, Gier 13, McGill 10, Johnson 10, Hess, Hamlin, Vanourek, Burnett.

COLUMBIA-BURBANK -- Julie Mosqueda 13, Rude 11, Roberts 8, Breazeale 6, McBride 4, Martineau, Zuhlke, Wilder.
