Diaz leads Pasco girls to decisive victory

KENNEWICK -- Yessica Diaz scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second quarter to lead Pasco to a 52-43 road victory at Southridge on Friday.

The victory gives the Bulldogs sole possession of fifth place with four games remaining.

While Diaz was going nuts in the second quarter, Pasco outscored Southridge 25-9 to blow the game open.

"That's where they got their big push, in the second quarter," Southridge coach Scott Stiles said. "(Diaz) hit three 3s in that 17 points. She really stepped up in the second quarter. We could have defended her a little better."

Emma Sanders had nine points to lead the Suns, while Paige Sorensen and Lauren Mickelsen combined for 16.

Southridge fell into a tie with Kennewick for the final playoff spot.

Kamiakin's Khadidja Toure was limited to 12 minutes and it showed as the Braves lost at Eastmont and fell into a tie with the Wildcats atop the CBBN 3A.

Toure had eight points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, losing her usual game-high honors to Eastmont's Kendra Scott, who collected 26 points for the Wildcats.

"It's a hard game to swallow," Braves coach Tammy Hutchison said.

"We're just going to have to brush ourselves off and get ready for the rest of our games."

Courtney Nelson and Sira Toure had nine points apiece for Kamiakin.

Colette Gall scored 12 points to lead visiting Hanford (7-9, 6-4) over Kennewick.

Angelique Whistocken had 15 points for the Lions (3-11, 3-7), who were outscored 28-8 in the first half.

"We got open looks and couldn't get anything in," Kennewick coach Tarah Staton said.

Paige Albrecht's 14 points led West Valley, which remains in fourth place in league play.
