The Mid-Columbia Athletes of the Week for December 23, 2010.
Joey Delgado, Jr., Hermiston
Delgado earned a state title at 119 pounds last season. Still, he wanted some revenge for a loss to Martin Meza of Caldwell (Idaho) -- his only loss last year.
He won the 130-pound title at Tri-State tournament in Coeur d’Alene on Saturday but was a little bummed that Meza didn’t show up for one of the most prestigious events in the region.
He’ll get his chance to face Meza at the Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, on Jan. 6-7.
“I really want to go undefeated this season,” he said. “I’m going to work hard to make sure I don’t lose any more matches.”

Last Friday, the University of Oregon-bound senior scored 27 points in one of the biggest games of her career -- a 61-60 home win against Chiawana.
“It was really big for us. We spent a whole week preparing,” she said.
The next night, she scored 20 more points on the road in a 67-43 win over Walla Walla.
“We had already lost two games on the road in overtime, but you can’t hang your head,” she said. “It prepared us for crunch time.”
