Athletes of the Week for December 14, 2010

The Mid-Columbia Athletes of the Week for December 14, 2010.

Grant Gallinger, Sr., Richland

Gallinger is in his third year on the varsity squad and he continues to show he has earned it.

The 6-foot-2 senior guard has developed an all-around game by being an extremely hard-worker, according to his coach Earl Streufert.

Gallinger scored 15 points in a win against Hanford, and followed it up with 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds in a victory against Kennewick.

“We moved the ball around really well that game (vs. Kennewick),” Gallinger said. “I was able to find a lot of open people and they were cutting really well.”

Richland is off to a 3-1 start, something Gallinger credits to the tough defensive play by the Bombers.

Marissa Caballero, Fr., Grandview

Caballero may be young and she may be small in stature, but don’t take her lightly.

The 5-foot-5 guard scored 25 points in a win at Class 3A Sunnyside. She followed that up with a 24-point, five-rebound effort against Ephrata in the CWAC opener.

“I just believed in myself and my team,” Caballero said. “When I shoot and I feel it, I’ll keep shooting. If I’m not feeling it, I’ll drive and dish off to my teammates.”

She was obviously feeling it last week and if those 49 points were any indication, teams better start keying in on her in the future.
