Cross country: 3A/4A Eastern Washington regional

Where: Walla Walla Point Park, Wenatchee

When: Today -- 3A girls 1 p.m.; 4A girls 1:30; 3A boys 2; 4A boys 2:30

At stake: State berths to top three teams in each race and top 15 individuals (including those on state teams)

Returning champs: 4A-- Ferris boys; Adam Thorne, Ferris; Richland girls; Baylee Mires, Mead; 3A-- North Central boys; Ben Johnston, North Central; Shadle Park girls; Katie Knight, North Central

Of note: CBBN teams have a good chance of taking three of four team titles -- Nos. 1 and 2 Eisenhower boys and girls in 4A and No. 2 Kamiakin girls in 3A -- reversing the recent dominance of the GSL. Since 2003, when the Big Nine and Mid-Valley swept the team titles (including the Kamiakin girls in the 4A), the GSL has won 17 of 24 titles, including 13 of 16 in the last four years. The North Central boys have won all six of the 3A titles since dropping down from the 4A in 2004. The Indians also have won the last four state titles and were runner-up in the two years preceding their run. ... The field will include 14 teams ranked in the state's top 10 of their class, with only 12 total teams advancing. Two other teams, Mount Spokane and Shadle Park, were ranked fourth and fifth in the 3A boys last week but were dropped from this week's rankings, which only include state-eligible teams. MS and Shadle failed to advance out of the GSL 3A meet, which had only two berths to regionals. ... There are two returning champs: Mires, a senior, and Knight, a sophomore. Of the 60 outright state qualifiers from last season, 39 are returning, including five of the top six from the 4A boys race, the top four in the 4A girls and four of the top six in the 3A girls.

CWAC/Great Northern Regional

Where: The Gorge, Quincy

When: Today -- Girls 1 p.m.; boys 1:30

At stake: State berths for top four teams and 20 individuals (including those on state teams)

Of note: Last year, the CWAC and GNL held separate qualifiers, with six teams and 30 individuals advancing to each of the boys and girls state races. But the West side swallowed two of the team berths along with the 10 individual spots that go with them. ... The combined meet will make for some strong races, pitting the No. 4 Ellensburg boys against No. 10 Deer Park. The girls race features three top-10 teams: No. 7 Cheney, No. 8 Ephrata and No. 10 Deer Park. There are three returning champs: Colville senior Colton Hastings on the boys side, and Cheney sophomore Sanne Holland and Ephrata senior Danielle Friend on the girls.
