Athletes of the Week for October 13, 2010

The Mid-Columbia Athletes of the Week for October 13, 2010.

Boys

Chance Watt, Senior, River View

With a brother as talented as E.J. Watt, who rushed for over 1,300 yards in his senior season at River View, Chance Watt has a lot to live up to.

So far, he’s well on his way to surpassing his brother’s total, accruing 1,115 yards and 13 touchdowns on just 106 carries -- an average of 10.5 yards per carry -- through the Panthers’ first six games.

“He’s happy for me, but he definitely wants to see how I do against (defending 1A state champion) Connell and in playoff games,” Chance said.

With River View a good bet to make the playoffs, Watt has a fair shot at his goal of 2,000 yards.

With a bright future in front of her — Baylor, Oregon State and Lipscomb (Tenn.) are among her college choices so far — Erin Hegarty is still grateful for the chance to run every day.

“It’s kind of a time to unwind and think about life,” she said. “I’m thankful God gave me the ability to run, because I know there are a lot of people out there who can’t.”

She used her ability to post the top area girls time at Saturday’s Richland Invite. She finished second but still became just the fifth girl to crack the 18-minute barrier with a time of 17:55.47.
